With reference to my Despatch No. 58 of the

13th. February, and to previous correspondence, I have the honour to

state that on the 8th. of last June, Dr. J. M. Atkinson, the

Principal Civil Medical Officer, minuted as follows:-

"Seventeen years service in this climate,

especially on the lower levels, is very trying to ladies.

I feel very strongly that an exception should

be made to admit of Nursing Sisters retiring on pension at

the age of fifty.

Hospital work with the necessary night duty

being a great tax on the constitution.

I know that many hospitals at home pension

their nurses at the age of fifty".

Dr. Atkinson also requested that this recommendation should be

referred for the opinion of the Medical Adviser to the Colonial

Office and to the Colonial Nursing Association.

Subject to the advice which may be given by these persons, I support the proposal that nursing sisters should be given the option of retiring on pension at the age of fifty, pro- -vided that they have by that time completed not less than 15
